One of the biggest surprises for first-time cruisers is realizing they won't have immediate access to their checked luggage. After you board, your suitcase is collected, sorted, and delivered to your cabin, which can take several hours depending on how busy embarkation day is.

That means everything you'll need during the first part of your vacation should be packed in your carry-on bag. Whether you want to grab lunch, relax by the pool, freshen up before dinner, or simply explore the ship, having a few essentials with you makes embarkation day much more enjoyable.

Start With Your Travel Documents

Before you think about swimsuits and sunscreen, make sure your important documents are easy to access. Your passport or other required identification, boarding documents, travel insurance information, credit cards, and a little cash should always stay with you.

I also recommend keeping digital copies of your travel documents on your phone, just in case.

Keep Medications in Your Carry-On

If there's one thing you should never pack in your checked luggage, it's medication.

Always keep prescription medications with you, along with any over-the-counter items you might need during your cruise. Motion sickness medicine, pain relievers, allergy medication, antacids, and a few basic first aid supplies take up very little space but can save the day if you need them.

Pack for Your First Afternoon Onboard

One of my favorite things about embarkation day is that the vacation begins the moment I step onboard.

Since I don't want to wait for my suitcase, I always pack my swimsuit, cover-up, flip-flops, sunscreen, and a lightweight sweater in my carry-on. That way I can enjoy lunch, relax by the pool, or start exploring the ship as soon as I board.

If your luggage happens to be delayed, you'll be glad you packed a change of clothes, too.

Don't Forget a Few Toiletries

After a morning of traveling, it's nice to freshen up before heading to dinner or sail away.

A toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, lip balm, moisturizer, face wipes, and contact lens supplies are all worth keeping in your carry-on so they're available whenever you need them.

Bringing Soda, Water, or Wine Onboard?

Many cruise lines allow guests to bring certain beverages onboard, but the rules vary by cruise line. One thing they all have in common is that approved beverages must be packed in your carry-on bag, not your checked luggage.

Whenever I'm deciding what belongs in my carry-on, I ask myself one simple question:

"Would I be okay without this for six hours?"

If the answer is no, it goes in my carry-on.
